Butrint: An Entire Ancient City in a National Park
Butrint isn’t just another pile of stones — it’s an entire ancient city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, set on a peninsula between a lagoon and the sea inside a lush national park. What makes it special is the continuity: Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Venetians built one on top of another for more than two thousand years, and you can see every layer on a single walk among the olive trees and cypresses. For many it’s the most impressive archaeological site in Albania.
It’s just about 30 minutes from Sarandë and 10 minutes from Ksamil, making it a perfect mix of culture and beach in the same day. Two or three hours is enough, but they’re unforgettable.
What you see
The marked trail leads between the main remains: the Greek theatre from the 3rd century BC, remarkably preserved and tucked into the forest; the baptistery with its Byzantine-era mosaic floor (usually covered with sand for protection); the Lion Gate and remnants of the walls; the Roman agora; and the triangular Venetian castle on top of the hill, with a small museum inside and a view over the whole lagoon. At the edge of the site, a small cable ferry waits to cross to the Ali Pasha fortress on the other side.
The national park
Butrint isn’t only antiquities — it sits in the heart of a national park of wetlands, lagoons and forest, an important bird reserve. The combination of ancient ruins within wild nature is part of the charm: the walk is shaded, calm and quiet, a world away from the bustle of nearby Ksamil.
How to combine it
It makes most sense to combine Butrint with a beach in Ksamil or with the Blue Eye spring for a full day in the south. Most travellers base themselves in Sarandë or Ksamil; compare stays in the Sarandë area in advance.
