The Albanian Alps: Theth, Valbona and the Famous Trek

The Albanian Alps — locally Bjeshkët e Nemuna, “the Accursed Mountains” — are the side of Albania most travellers miss, and that’s a shame. North of Shkodër, on the border with Montenegro and Kosovo, sharp rock peaks rise above green valleys, isolated stone villages and waterfalls — scenery reminiscent of the Dolomites, but far wilder and quieter.

The heart of the region is two villages: Theth and Valbona, with Albania’s most famous trek running between them. This is the part of a trip that takes the most planning — but it repays the investment with interest.

The Theth–Valbona trek

The classic hike is a day-long crossing between the two valleys, about 6–8 hours of walking, over a mountain pass at around 1,800 metres. The route is well marked, needs no technical gear, and in season it’s busy with hikers — but it’s demanding: a sustained climb, a long descent and strong sun. Most people walk it from Theth to Valbona (a gentler ascent). You can hire a horse for your luggage, and in season there are coffee and lemonade stalls along the way.

What else is in the villages

Even without the long trek, Theth alone justifies two days. The little church in the heart of the valley is the symbol of the region; nearby are the Grunas Waterfall, the “Blue Eye of Theth” (a clear pool — different from the southern Blue Eye), and the historic lock-in tower (kulla), where men once sheltered during blood feuds under the ancient Albanian Kanun code. Valbona is calmer, with a broad valley and easy trails for shorter walks.

Getting there

The classic and most beautiful route is via the Lake Koman ferry: from Shkodër by minibus to the Koman pier, a roughly 3-hour cruise between cliffs to Fierza, and then a minibus to Valbona. Theth also has a direct mountain road from Shkodër (about 2.5–3 hours, a high-clearance vehicle is best). The simplest option is to book a guided trek package that includes transfers, the ferry and accommodation.

Where to stay

Accommodation is in rural guesthouses in Theth and Valbona — simple, warm, with excellent home cooking. Compare stays in Theth in advance; in season places fill up, so book early. Many travellers spend the night before in Shkodër.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Theth to Valbona trek?

Albania's most famous hike — a day route of about 6–8 hours between two mountain villages, crossing a pass at around 1,800 metres with alpine views. It requires no technical experience, but does need reasonable fitness and proper hiking shoes.

When can you hike in the Albanian Alps?

Mainly from June to late September. Outside that window snow blocks the passes, and most village guesthouses close until spring.

Do you need a guide for the Theth–Valbona trek?

Not essential — the route is marked and busy with hikers in season. That said, an organised tour or guide eases the logistics (transfers, ferry, accommodation) and reassures anyone not used to mountain treks.
