The Albanian Riviera: A Guide to the Southern Coast

The Albanian Riviera is the reason most travellers fall in love with Albania. A roughly 100 km strip of coast along the Ionian Sea, between Vlorë in the north and Sarandë in the south, with turquoise water, cliff-ringed coves, and old stone villages climbing the slope above the sea. It’s the Greece of thirty years ago — the same water, at half the price.

The gateway to the Riviera is the Llogara Pass: a mountain road that climbs from Vlorë to 1,000 metres through pine forest, then drops to the coast in a series of bends with an opening view over the whole sea. From here south begins the beautiful stretch of the main SH8 road.

The villages

Small stone villages are strung along the Riviera, each with its own character:

Dhërmi and Drymades — the lively heart of the Riviera, with the most accessible beaches, beach bars and summer nightlife. Himarë — a pleasant coastal town with a promenade, fish restaurants and several lovely beaches nearby, the most balanced base for a stay. Vuno, Qeparo and Palasë — quieter stone villages, authentic and less touristed. Borsh — holds one of Albania’s longest beaches, ringed by olive groves.

The beaches

The real magic is in the beaches you have to work for. Gjipe Beach sits at the mouth of a canyon, reached by a half-hour walk or by boat — one of Albania’s most beautiful. Livadhi near Himarë and Jale near Dhërmi are white pebbles and clear water, some organised with sunbeds and some wild. In summer, an all-day boat trip along the Riviera is the best way to reach the hidden coves.

Where to stay

The most convenient bases are Himarë and Dhërmi — central, with plenty of restaurants, beaches and accommodation for every budget. Compare stays on the Riviera in advance; in summer book well ahead. Anyone who also wants Ksamil and Butrint will prefer Sarandë at the southern end.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Albanian Riviera?

The southern coastal strip of Albania along the Ionian Sea, between Vlorë and Sarandë, beyond the Llogara Pass. This is where the country's most beautiful turquoise beaches and picturesque stone villages on the mountain slopes are found.

Where is the best place to stay on the Riviera?

Himarë and Dhërmi are the most convenient bases — central, with restaurants, beaches and varied accommodation. Sarandë at the southern end is better for Ksamil and Butrint.

Do you need a car for the Riviera?

Highly recommended. Public transport along the SH8 coast road is limited and doesn't reach some of the hidden beaches. A rental car opens up the whole Riviera at your own pace.
