The Lake Koman Ferry: Albania's Most Beautiful Cruise
The Lake Koman ferry is one of Albania’s unforgettable experiences — not a destination in itself, but a journey. The lake was formed by a dam on the Drin river, and the crossing winds between steep green cliffs, hidden coves and isolated villages reachable only by water. Many call it “the fjords of Albania”, and it’s considered one of the most beautiful boat journeys in Europe.
Beyond the beauty, the ferry has a practical role: it’s the link that connects Shkodër to the Albanian Alps. It’s the leg that turns a long mountain drive into the prettiest part of the day.
How it works
The classic route: early in the morning a minibus leaves Shkodër for the Koman pier (about two hours, part of it on a road through a narrow, dramatic tunnel). From there the ferry sails north to Fierza, about two and a half to three hours of cruising. At Fierza, minibuses wait to take you on to Valbona, the starting point for the trek to Theth. There is a large slow ferry (which also carries cars) and faster passenger boats; times vary by season.
Practical tips
The key is coordinating the connections. The transfers, the ferry and the onward leg to Valbona are synchronised, so the simplest approach is to arrange the whole chain in advance through your Shkodër guesthouse or the ferry companies (Berisha, Alpin). In summer you must reserve ahead — the ferry fills up. Bring water and a snack; there isn’t much food on board. Pack a warm layer — even in summer it’s breezy on the water.
Where to stay
There’s no real accommodation on the lake itself. Most travellers sleep in Shkodër the night before (to catch the early minibus), and in Valbona or Theth the night after. Compare stays in Shkodër in advance for the departure.

How long does the cruise take?
About two and a half to three hours, from the Koman pier to Fierza. There is a slow ferry (large, carrying cars) and faster passenger boats.
