Cities in Albania
Shkodër: Gateway to the North and the Alps
Shkodër is one of Albania’s oldest cities and the gateway to the mountainous north. Most travellers arrive as a staging post on the way to the Alps, but it is pleasant enough to justify a night: a flat, relaxed cycling city with a central pedestrian street, cafés, and proximity to the largest lake in the Balkans.
Shkodër is also Albania’s Catholic cultural capital, with a large cathedral and a long artistic tradition — a mix that gives it a different character from the other cities. It’s worth giving it an evening before you plunge into the mountains.
What to see
Above the city stands Rozafa Castle, an ancient fortress on a hill at the meeting of three rivers, with a grim local legend of a woman sacrificed in its building. The view from the walls over Lake Shkodër, the Buna river and the mountains is the reason to climb. In the centre, the cobbled Kolë Idromeno street is the heart of life, lined with cafés and restored Italianate buildings, and the Marubi Museum displays a rare historic photography collection — the first photographs ever taken in Albania.
Lake Shkodër and cycling
Lake Shkodër is the largest in the Balkans, straddling the border with Montenegro and ringed by bird reserves. Shkodër is a flat, bike-friendly city, and almost every guesthouse rents bicycles — a loop out to the lakeshore, to the village of Shiroka for a fish lunch, or to the Mesi Ottoman bridge is the nicest way to spend an afternoon.
Getting there
From Tirana you reach Shkodër in about two hours by bus or furgon, with frequent departures throughout the day. Shkodër is also the last stop on the way north to Montenegro — buses run to Ulcinj and Podgorica. Transport to the Koman pier and the Alps is most easily arranged through your guesthouse the evening before.
Where to stay
Accommodation in Shkodër is cheap and comfortable, and many guesthouses specialise in onward logistics for the Alps — transfers, large-bag storage and booking stays in Theth. Compare stays in Shkodër in advance; choose something in the walkable centre around Kolë Idromeno street.
