Cities in Albania
Vlorë: Where Two Seas Meet
Vlorë is Albania’s third-largest city and the point where the Adriatic meets the Ionian — to the north the water is shallow and sandy, to the south it deepens and turns blue. It also carries historical weight: Albania declared independence from the Ottoman Empire here in 1912. For travellers, Vlorë is mainly the northern gateway to the Riviera.
Vlorë itself is a busy Albanian resort city in summer — less internationally touristed than Sarandë, more local in character. It’s worth giving it an evening on the promenade before you cross the mountains to the beautiful beaches to the south.
What to see
The city itself is largely a long, modern seafront promenade popular with Albanian holidaymakers, lined with cafés and fish restaurants. In the centre stand Flag Square and the Independence Museum, in the building where the nation was declared in 1912 — a quick stop for history lovers. Above the city sits Kanina Castle with views over the bay, and nearby the quiet Zvërnec Monastery on a small island in the lagoon.
But the real star is the south: from Vlorë begins the Llogara Pass, a dizzying mountain road climbing over 1,000 metres through pine forest and descending to the Riviera — one of the most scenic drives in Europe, with an opening view over the entire southern coast.
Getting there
From Tirana you reach Vlorë in about two to three hours by bus or furgon, on a fast road via Fier. Vlorë is the northern end of the Riviera: from here you continue south over the Llogara Pass to Dhërmi, Himarë and Sarandë. There is no active passenger train, but there is a ferry port with lines to Italy (Bari, Brindisi).
Where to stay
Vlorë suits one night before diving into the Riviera, or a cheap local summer beach base. Compare stays in Vlorë in advance; in summer the promenade is full and room prices rise. If you’d rather already be in the heart of the Riviera, sleep beyond the Llogara Pass in Dhërmi or Himarë.
From there the Riviera begins to the south. For the full picture see the Albania guide and the other cities.
Frequently asked questions
What is special about Vlorë?
Vlorë is the point where the Adriatic meets the Ionian, and the northern gateway to the Riviera via the scenic Llogara Pass. Albania's independence was also declared here in 1912.
Vlorë or Sarandë as a base?
Sarandë is more convenient for Ksamil and Butrint in the far south; Vlorë is better if you are opening the Riviera from the north, or combining the Llogara Pass and the Karaburun-Sazan marine park.
Is Vlorë worth a stop or just a drive-through?
Most travellers stop for one night as a staging post before the Riviera. History buffs, or anyone who wants to cruise to the Karaburun-Sazan marine park, will want a full day; otherwise half a day plus the Llogara Pass is enough.
