When to Visit Albania: Seasons, Weather and Crowds
Albania has no single “right” season — it depends on what you want. Coast or mountains, quiet or buzz, peak summer or a calm shoulder season. Broadly, most travellers will find the best balance in the shoulder seasons, when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are low.
The seasons in brief
Spring (May–June) — perhaps the best time: nature green and in bloom, pleasant weather, the sea warming, and the beaches still quiet. Summer (July–August) — hot and crowded. The southern coast is at its peak but also under the most pressure; prices in Ksamil and Sarandë jump. Autumn (September–October) — a favourite of many travellers: the sea still warm from summer, the roads emptying, and prices dropping. Winter (November–March) — suits cities, culture and low prices, but not the coast; the mountains are under snow.
Coast versus mountains
If the goal is the coast — the Riviera, Ksamil and the south — aim for June or September: warm water without the August crush. If the goal is the Albanian Alps and the Theth–Valbona trek — the window is late June to early October, when the trails are open and the Koman Lake ferry runs regularly. In July–August the mountains are pleasant even when the coast is scorching.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to travel to Albania?
May–June and September–October are the perfect months: pleasant weather, a sea warm enough for swimming (mainly June and September), clear roads and more comfortable prices. These shoulder seasons combine the best of both worlds.
Can you travel to Albania in summer?
Yes, but July–August is very hot and the coast is crowded — Albanians, Greeks and tourists together. Ksamil and Sarandë fill up and prices jump. If you must do summer, book lodging months ahead and arrive early at the beaches.
What about winter and the Alps?
Winter (November–March) suits cities and culture but not the coast. The Theth–Valbona trek is effectively closed in winter due to snow, and the Koman Lake ferry is reduced. The Alps trekking season runs from late June to early October.
