Visa and Entry to Albania: Everything You Need to Know

Entering Albania is among the simplest in Europe for most travellers. There’s no visa to arrange, no advance online form, and no entry fee — you arrive with a valid passport and get a stamp. It’s one of the things that make Albania an especially easy destination for a spontaneous trip.

The main rules

Citizens of most Western countries are entitled to a stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period visa-free, for tourism. Your passport should be valid — at least six months beyond your departure date is recommended — and ideally have a blank page for the stamp. On entry you may be asked to show an onward ticket (return or continuing) and occasionally proof of your first night’s stay, so keep them handy on your phone.

Land border crossings

Many arrive in Albania not only by air but also via land crossings — from Montenegro (to the north, near Shkodër), from Kosovo, from North Macedonia or from Greece (to the south, near Sarandë). The same visa-free rules apply at the land border. The Corfu combination is especially popular: a short ferry from the Greek island to Sarandë, very convenient in summer.

After entry

Once you’re in, there’s no further registration for a normal tourist stay. You can start planning: see the flights guide, the transport guide, and when to go. For the full picture — the Albania guide and the practical info guide.

Do you need a visa for Albania?

Most Western visitors don't. Citizens of the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia and many other countries — including Israel — enter visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. You arrive with a valid passport, no advance form and no fee at the border.

How long must your passport be valid?

It's recommended to have at least six months' validity beyond your planned departure date. It's also worth making sure there's a blank page for the entry stamp.

Do you need an onward ticket or proof of accommodation?

Border officers sometimes ask to see an onward or return ticket, and occasionally proof of your first night's accommodation. It isn't always checked, but it's wise to have them available on your phone just in case.
