Durrës: Ancient Port and Beach Near Tirana
Durrës is Albania’s main port and one of the country’s oldest cities — formerly Dyrrachium, an important stop on the Roman Via Egnatia road. For most travellers it is a day trip from Tirana or a short stop, thanks to a combination of Roman antiquities and a nearby sandy beach.
Durrës won’t be the highlight of your trip, but it is convenient: 40 minutes from the capital, full of Roman history hidden in the middle of a living city, and with the closest sandy beach to Tirana. Usually it works as a short stop rather than a destination in its own right.
What to see
The central site is the Roman amphitheatre from the 2nd century — the largest in the Balkans, able to hold thousands of spectators, and surprisingly hidden in the middle of the modern city. Nearby are remains of Byzantine walls, the Roman Forum (Macellum), and the Archaeological Museum on the seafront, one of the most important in Albania. At the end of the promenade stands the 15th-century Venetian Tower. You can cover all of these in a few hours on foot.
The Durrës beach stretches south for kilometres of sand — popular and crowded with Albanians in summer, and lined with hotels, bars and fish restaurants. It is convenient and accessible, but anyone after clear, Caribbean-like water will only find it further south, on the Riviera.
Getting there
The link between Tirana and Durrës is the shortest in Albania — about 40 minutes by frequent bus or by train (one of the few lines still running). Durrës is also Albania’s main ferry port, with regular lines to Italy (Bari, Ancona) — a convenient entry or exit point for anyone combining Albania with a Balkan or Italian trip.
Where to stay
Most travellers prefer to stay in Tirana and visit Durrës for the day, but there is plenty of beach accommodation for summer — from large resort hotels to apartments. Compare stays in Durrës in advance. If you’re arriving or leaving by ferry, a night in Durrës saves an early-morning drive.

Frequently asked questions
Is Durrës worth a stop?
Yes, mainly as a day trip from Tirana (40 minutes) or a stop on the way south. The Roman amphitheatre and the nearby beach justify a few hours, but usually not a full overnight.
Is the Durrës beach good?
It is the closest sandy beach to Tirana, so it is popular and crowded in summer. For prettier beaches, continue south to the Riviera.
How long do you need in Durrës?
Half a day is enough for the amphitheatre, the old town and the promenade. Arriving by bus or train from Tirana, you can fit it all into an easy day trip and be back by evening.
