Krujë: Skanderbeg's Stronghold

Krujë is a small town on a mountain slope north of Tirana, and a sacred place in Albanian national memory: from here Skanderbeg, the national hero, led the resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. It is a classic, easy day trip from Tirana, combining history, views and an excellent bazaar.

Krujë’s setting — on a cliff above the coastal plain — once gave it its strength, and today gives it its views. The combination of a dramatic castle, a national museum and an old bazaar makes it a concentrated taste of historic Albania in half a day.

What to see

Above the town stands Krujë Castle, and inside it the Skanderbeg Museum — a modern, brutalist-styled building telling the story of the resistance, with flags, weapons and banners. Beside it is the Ethnographic Museum in a preserved, centuries-old Ottoman mansion, one of the finest in Albania. But what makes Krujë memorable is the old bazaar (Pazari i Vjetër): a cobbled stepped street of traditional wooden shops selling carpets, copperware, antiques and souvenirs — the best shopping in Albania.

Above the castle, for energetic walkers, rises the Sari Salltik shrine in a cave on the mountain — a steep climb with a breathtaking view over the coastal plain all the way to the sea. In the bazaar itself it’s worth sitting at a small café, trying a Turkish coffee, and bargaining gently over a carpet or a piece of copperware.

Getting there

Most visitors come on a day trip from Tirana by furgon (about an hour) — the furgons leave from northern Tirana and stop in the lower town of Fushë-Krujë, from where a short taxi runs up to the old town. With a rental the drive is easy, but the final road to the castle is steep and narrow.

Where to stay

Most visitors don’t stay in Krujë, but anyone wanting a quiet mountain evening will find a few small, charming guesthouses in the old town with valley views. Compare stays in Krujë in advance — especially nice for the sunset and a quiet morning in the bazaar before the day-trippers arrive.
